Why Don't We Certify Tech / People Managers?

In our tech world, we love certifications. Cloud certs, CISSP, PMP, CSM – you name it. But when it comes to leading people? Nothing. Maybe this absence of certification exists for a reason.

Now, let's think about the following:

– Tech changes fast. Can a certificate keep up?
– With AI coming in, how will managing people change?
– In a world of remote work and digital collaboration, are traditional leadership skills enough?
– Good leaders balance giving directions (top-down) and empowering teams (bottom-up).
– Our teams span the globe. What works in Bangalore might not in Boston.
– Leading a startup vs. a big corp – totally different ballgames, right?
– Tech impacts lives. How do we ensure our leaders make ethical choices?
– Great managers come from all backgrounds. Would a certificate limit this diversity?
– How do we even measure good leadership?

Sometimes, turning an Individual Contributor into a manager feels like handing the keys of a plane to a Formula One driver. It bothers me – are we setting them up for success?

Yet, great leadership often emerges in unexpected ways. Let me share a personal story: Early in my career, I asked my manager for guidance on a decision. Instead of giving me the answer, he said, "You decide and let me know." It was intimidating, but it made me feel trusted and empowered. This attribute of a great manager – fostering trust and empowerment – is something no certification can teach.

But here's the million-dollar question: In today's AI-driven world, should we rethink how we develop tech leaders?

I'm curious:
– Has a manager ever changed the course of your career?
– What makes a great tech leader in 2024?
– How can we help engineers and top leaders understand each other better?

Let's chat about this. Your ideas could shape how we grow tomorrow's tech leaders. Thanks for reading this!
