~The Winter Coat Theory – Managing Ego in Modern Workplace~
Ever noticed how a simple two-person discussion or 1:1 can feel like managing four different personalities? That's because it actually is – each person brings their ego along, doubling every interaction's complexity.
And if you're in a team? Well, multiply that by each person. Two people means four entities, three means six. In a large team? You do the math!
Life would be so simple without ego. No hatred, no anger, no complications.
But here's the reality check – the world out there is tough, and guess what? It's already full of other people's egos occupying every space.
So what's the practical solution?
Think of ego like a winter coat. You don't wear it inside your home (or workplace!). You don't flash it in every meeting or in every email. You keep it in the cupboard. But you don't throw it away because situations will get cold – when someone tries to take advantage of your good nature, when unfairness needs to be confronted, when your team needs protection.
Ego isn't for everyday use. It's not meant to be worn to every discussion, every feedback session, or every team interaction. That's like wearing a winter coat in summer – unnecessary and uncomfortable for everyone.
This reminds me of Rishi (sage) Vishwamitra – though known for his anger, his wisdom earned him the status of a sage. When a goddess suggested he'd find instant peace by giving up his ego, he shared profound wisdom. He said, "In a world where even virtuous people face injustice, anger born of ego becomes a tool for protecting dharma (righteousness). Without it, how will the weak find their voice? How will truth stand against powerful falsehood?" His greatness lay not in renouncing ego, but in understanding its proper place and purpose.
Simple wisdom? Keep your ego in the cupboard. Use it only when you need to protect yourself or your team. At home (and at work!), let it rest.
Life hack: The less you wear your ego 'winter-coat' in your daily interactions, the more productive and peaceful your space becomes 😀
