The Art of Observation: Discovering Insights in Everyday Life
The other day, I was asked a rather interesting question – "What gives you the authority to write on the subjects you write about? Why should people read your articles?" This question got me thinking about the sources of my insights, and I realized they mostly come from my observations.
Observing is an art. It's about where you choose to direct your attention and what details you absorb from that focus. To me, life is a process, a beautiful journey without any destination, and to be lived one moment at a time. It's an accumulation of experiences, a maze of learning. But here's the catch: you can only truly understand this if you're present and if you're watching with curiosity.
Then there's my job. I strive to make my work outcome-oriented. I focus on the results, and the tangible effects of my actions. But what if we flip these perspectives? What if we live our lives chasing outcomes and view our jobs as processes without explicit ends and destinations?
Well, I believe that if we started demanding specific outcomes from life, we'd risk missing out on the subtle nuances of the journey, the unexpected twists and turns that make life fascinating. We'd overlook the small moments of joy and learning that come with just being in the moment.
Similarly, if we began treating our jobs as a process without a defined end, we'd probably lose motivation. We need goals to strive towards, and targets to hit. Without these, work could become an endless, aimless slog.
The appreciation of the process and the pursuit of outcomes are both important in different contexts. The key is to observe and understand when to focus on the journey (process) and when to concentrate on the destination (outcome), and apply these principles accordingly in our lives and work.
This brings me back to the original question: where do I derive my insights from, and why should people read what I write? The answer is simple. Like many others, I observe. I watch, I learn, and I share those lessons.
Anyone can do the same. We all have unique perspectives and experiences. If we just took a moment to observe, to reflect, we'd find that we all have insights to share. We're all on this grand journey together, each with our own viewpoints. So, let's cherish the process, celebrate the outcomes, and keep sharing our insights.
So, the next time you read an article or a post, know that it's not just about the author's authority on a subject. It's about their unique perspective, their ability to observe, and their willingness to share their insights. And that's something we can all learn from.
