~ Seeing Beyond the Surface is the Trait of Successful People Managers

A new role in management or a seasoned veteran, one trait stands out: the ability to see beyond the surface. This requires not judging by looks, speech, or behaviour, but looking deeper. It comes down to a lot of empathy or a lot of experience or both.

In my early days as a manager, I failed to recognize a quiet, introverted team member's potential, mistaking his reticence for lack of ambition. But when a complex issue arose that stumped everyone, he stepped up and resolved it brilliantly. I learned a crucial lesson: talent can be quiet and unassuming.

If you're a new manager, bring a lot of empathy to the table, a little bit won't be enough. Think of it as being a gardener, nurturing the growth of various plants, each requiring unique care and attention. Empathy helps you understand each team member's unique strengths and see beyond surface-level attributes.

For experienced managers, if you've practiced empathy throughout your career, it will allow you to understand that potential isn't always visible or loud; sometimes, it's hidden beneath layers of humility.

Whether you're new or experienced, remember: successful management is like being a master sculptor. Your job is not to create the sculpture but to remove the unnecessary stone to reveal the masterpiece within. After all, every individual is a unique blend of skills and potential, and it's our job as managers to help them shine. Our teams rely on us to recognize, nurture, and celebrate their unique talents and contributions. Let's commit to looking beyond the surface, and create an environment where all forms of talent can thrive.
